these days, newer rap fans seem to use the term to refer any 'old' hip-hop act rather than for any specific generation...i've heard ppl refer to 2Pac and Biggie Smalls as 'old school', altho most hip-hop heads wudn't call them that.

technically, 'old school' is a term we use for the first generation of hip-hop from the seventies up to about 1988-ish. so, artists like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kool Moe Dee...Rakim G Rap would be properly termed 'Golden Age'.

Rakim used multies heavily, but i do not recall him using that rapid-fire style with the same vowels before G Rap (Follow the Leader being the closest Rakim song i can relate to that style prior to 1990).
